Not A Single One!

Vendall W. Dollarhide

A third–grade boy had spent all night preparing for Valentines Day by making everyone in his class a card. All night he labored over the project. “One for Jenny, one for Mark,” he said as he signed and sealed each one. It was a beautiful act of kindness for anyone, let alone a third–grade young man.

As he went to bed that night, the excitement of the following day caused him to toss and turn for awhile. Finally he settled his thoughts. “It will be valentine's Day soon,” he thought to himself as he drifted off to sleep.

The next day he ran to his calssroom and began placing the cards he had made into the other children's special envelopes. He noticed that his was empty, but paid no attention because he would check again after the first class was finished. Again he checked and—nothing. Lunchtime rolled around and still no Valentine cards, not a single one was in the little boy's envelope. “Maybe they just forgot!” he said out loud to himself.

When his mother picked him up from school, he walked to the car wih his head down, looking at his feet. She noticed his Valentine's envelope was empty. He mumbled, “Not a single one. Not a single one.” When he got in the car, he again mumbled, "Not a single one." He raised his fingers one by one as if counting and said, “Not a single one.” He then looked up at his mother and began to smile and said, “I didn't forget a single one!”

Some people say that “why” isn't what's important; it's just your actions. I have heard so many people exclaim, “I don't care why they did it; just that they did it!”

“Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet–smelling aroma” (Eph. 5:1–2). We are called to be imitatiors of God, and this means that our motivation for every word and act is love. Love for God and love for our fellow man.

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others ” (Phil. 2:3–4). This passage clearly states that motivation does matter. Paul warns the church at Philippi that nothing should be done with selfish motives. When we serve, we should humble ourselves and elevate others to a more prominent position. Humility is essential to truly serving as Christ served.

I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’ ” (Acts 20:35). In order to be more Christlike, we must care more about serving others than about what others should do for us.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing” (I Cor. 13:3). A person could spend their entire life going through the motions of serving and never truly serve. Love is at the center of Christ's life and sacrifice; therefore, it should be a focal point of our service to others. There is a difference between a Christian's service and the world's service. The difference is the motivation. A Christian should be motivated by love that is found from having a personal relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ. Our motivation should never be of the return factor. It doesn't matter what we get back, if anything at all. All that matters is that we are striving to pattern our walk after the Son of God and that we will receive a home in heaven as our reward!

We should always strive to help our children and others grow in knowledge and truth. One way that will help them grow is to know our motivation for our actions and words. God never wanted His children to be robots without a soul. He desires YOU to “...love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” and to “... love your neighbor as yourself” (Matt. 22:37, 39). In closing, I would encourage you to examine Paul's statement to the Churches of Galatia: “... through love serve one another” (Gal. 5:13).

Takoradi, Ghana

The material that Mission Printing sends me has made the church of Christ and my personal work well known in our area of Ghana. When people see the colorful books, they know and sate, “It's from the church of Christ.”

Many people invite me into their home to study because the Mission Printing books open the door. The books that I use the most are: A Guide to Find the True Church, What Every “New” Christian Should Know, What the Christian Woman Can Do in the Church, and Shepherding the Sheep. All the congregations that I visit request the song books that you provide.

A Jehovah's Witness that we gave some of the books has now stopped attending the denomination because he believed what your material says and the scriptrues they contained. He is now studying in order to make the biggest decision of his life.

We are delighted to inform you that the shipment of assorted literature which you sent us arrived safely. The contents of the parcels were simply stunning! We perused the books and discovered that the scriptural contents are simply superb! We thank God for Mission Printing because the books presented God's word so clearly and soundly. God bless you!

We would like to make another request of some specific titles that we believe will be very useful in events that are coming up soon. We are having a youth program that is coming up in the first quarter of 2009. The theme of the youth rally is “Raising a God Fearing Youth.” We hope to be dealing with

issues such as alcohol and drug abuse, sexual sins, and leadership, as well as others.

We want to specifically thank you for the copies of the songbooks that you included in the latest parcels. The songbook is wonderful and it contains most of the songs that we love to sing. We love to introduce the songbook, use them for the program, and then keep them for subsequent programs that will come up in the future. We are expection 200–500 young people from all over the city. We understand that you may not have enough copies to go around. Any material that you can send will be received with joy and used to the glory of God.

INSIGHT FROM THE HEART OF
ELEANOR BIRDWELL

University Church of Christ (Tyler, TX)
Mission Printing Volunteer

If there is a light in the soul,
There will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person,
There will be harmony in the house.
If there is harmonyin the house,
There will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world.

I would like to thank all of the volunteers that are a part of the Mission Printing family. I have been working with this ministry for six years and it has been incredible! I am humbled each and every day that we gather at Mission Printing. Our volunteers truly are a family tha thas a deep love for lost souls around the world.

I am constantly being encouraged and rejuvenated. The Mission Printing workers have taught me a great lesson that I will use all of my days. Youthfullness has nothing to do with our bodies; it has everything to do with our souls! I have gained a deeper appreciation of what God truly can do in our lives when we allow Him access. I want to thank all of our volunteers for being my teachers. It has been my sincere honor and pleasure to sit at your feet and learn from your words and deeds.
